Board hires 1 firefighter, department needs more

Humboldt city board met Monday, June 10, and approved the hiring of one new firefighter. On the recommendation of Humboldt Fire Chief Chester Owens, the board voted to hire Byron McCurry of Alamo as a firefighter. Owens noted that since March, he had five applicants but only one who could qualify. Firefighters are required to pass a background check, a basic skills test, an oral interview and an agility test. Signs are going up all over town, teams are prepping their campsites, menus are being planned, chores galore, all for Relay for Life. Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. at Bailey Park. Come out for a fun-filled night and help fight for a cure for cancer.

Historical society meets
The Humboldt Historical Society will meet Thursday, June 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Twin Oaks, 2227 E. Main Street in Humboldt. Join the group as they discuss local history and genealogy. The public is encouraged to bring photos and other materials relating to the history of Humboldt and southern Gibson County. This meeting is free to attend.
